This image of the three stags originates from a mediaeval tomb carving in St. Clement's Church, Rodel, Isle of Harris, Scotland. The stags are part of a hunting scene, one of a series of elaborately carved sandstone panels from the sculptured arch over the tomb, constructed in 1528, of Alexander Macleod (Alasdair Crotach, meaning humpbacked), 8th Chief of the Macleods of Harris and Dunvegan, who broke with tradition in choosing to spend his final years in Harris and to be buried here instead of at Iona like his predecessors.
